Landing a Job in Aerospace Manufacturing: The Certifications That Open Doors

September 9, 2026

Aerospace and defense manufacturing pays a real premium over general manufacturing for candidates who bring the right credentials — and the credentials that matter here are specific, not generic “manufacturing experience.”

AS9100 experience is worth naming explicitly

If you’ve worked inside a quality system built on AS9100 — not just ISO 9001 — say so directly on your resume. It’s a distinct, aerospace-specific credential, and hiring managers in this space are specifically screening for it.

NADCAP matters for special processes

If your background includes welding, heat treating, non-destructive testing (NDT), plating, or coatings work that’s been through NADCAP audits, that experience is worth highlighting prominently — it’s a narrower, more specialized credential than general certification in your trade, and it’s exactly what aerospace employers are trying to find.

Precision machining has its own bar here

Aerospace components often carry tighter tolerances and stricter material traceability requirements than general precision machining. If you’ve held those tolerances and worked with aerospace-grade materials (titanium, high-temp alloys, composites), that’s worth calling out specifically rather than folding into general “CNC experience.”

Where to start if you’re outside the industry

Community and technical college programs with an aerospace manufacturing track, or entry-level QA/QC roles at an AS9100-certified shop, are both realistic ways in. Even general precision machining experience is a strong foundation — the aerospace-specific tolerances and documentation requirements are learnable on the job once you’re in the door.

Where this path leads

Aerospace manufacturing rewards depth: machinists, quality engineers, and program managers with a real track record in this world tend to see faster advancement and stronger compensation than equivalent roles in general manufacturing.
