How to Write a Resume That Gets You Hired on the Plant Floor

August 5, 2026

A resume for a machinist, maintenance tech, or plant operations role gets read differently than an office resume — hiring managers are scanning for specific, concrete signals, not polish.

Lead with what you can actually do

Certifications, equipment you’ve run, and specific processes (MIG/TIG, PLC brands, CNC controls, ISO experience) belong near the top, not buried in a paragraph. A hiring manager scanning quickly should be able to tell in five seconds whether you have the hands-on experience the role needs.

Use numbers wherever you have them

“Reduced changeover time” is vague. “Cut changeover time from 45 minutes to 20” is specific and memorable. You don’t need a number for everything, but wherever you have one — uptime improved, scrap rate reduced, units per shift — use it.

List the actual equipment and software

Don’t just say “CNC machining” — name the control (Fanuc, Haas, Mazak, Siemens) if you know it. Don’t just say “maintenance” — say whether that’s electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, or all three. Specificity is what separates a resume that gets a callback from one that doesn’t.

Keep it to one or two pages, and skip the objective statement

Hiring managers reading dozens of resumes for a technical role want to get to your experience fast. A generic “seeking a challenging position” line at the top wastes the most valuable real estate on the page.

Don’t hide gaps or job changes — explain them briefly

Frequent moves or gaps aren’t automatically disqualifying in manufacturing, where layoffs, plant closures, and seasonal contract work are common. A one-line honest explanation (“contract role ended when the project wrapped”) reads better than silence that makes a recruiter guess.

When you’re ready, skip the job boards

A lot of manufacturing roles never get posted publicly at all — they go through a recruiter’s existing network first. Submit your resume and we’ll reach out when something matches, posted or not.
