Recruiting Through the Semiconductor and Battery Manufacturing Talent Shortage

September 5, 2026

Semiconductor fabs and battery gigafactories have expanded faster than the specialized workforce that runs them, and it shows in time-to-fill numbers across the industry. If your hiring process was built for a looser labor market, it’s worth rethinking before the next req opens.

Why this market is different

Equipment engineers, process engineers, and facilities/reliability engineers with real fab or cell-production experience are in short supply relative to demand, and much of that talent is being actively recruited by competitors, not sitting on job boards. A slow, generic hiring process loses candidates to whoever moves first.

What tends to go wrong

Two patterns show up repeatedly: postings that describe the role in generic “manufacturing engineer” language instead of naming the actual tools, processes, or yield metrics involved, and interview loops long enough that a strong candidate accepts a competing offer before you’ve made a decision.

What actually works

Be specific about the equipment and process in the posting — the right candidate will recognize the role immediately, and it filters out people who don’t actually have the background. Compress the interview loop where you can; in a market this tight, speed is a real competitive advantage, not just a nice-to-have.

Where to find candidates who aren’t actively looking

A meaningful share of strong equipment and process engineers in this space aren’t applying anywhere — they’re being reached directly. That’s a sourcing problem generic job postings don’t solve, and it’s the search a specialized recruiting partner is built to run.

If you’re hiring equipment, process, facilities, or reliability engineers in this space, tell us what you’re hiring for — or see our full approach on the Semiconductor & Battery/Electronics Manufacturing page.
