How to Staff a New Plant Before It Opens

September 15, 2026

Staffing a new facility is a fundamentally different hiring problem than filling an open requisition — there’s no existing team, no current operation to reference, and a construction timeline that doesn’t move for a slow search.

Why generic hiring timelines don’t work for greenfield projects

A typical hiring process reacts to an open role. A greenfield project needs to build an entire team — leadership, engineering, automation, maintenance, and operations — against a fixed opening date, often while the facility itself is still under construction. Starting that search after the building is finished means running behind from day one.

Start with leadership, early

Plant manager and engineering leadership hires need to happen early enough to actually shape the build — equipment selection, layout decisions, and early process design all benefit from having the person who’ll run the facility involved before it’s finished, not handed a finished building to figure out.

Automation and controls talent needs to be in place for commissioning

Whoever is going to commission the automated lines needs to be hired with enough runway to be involved in that process, not brought on the week production is supposed to start. This is one of the most common greenfield hiring mistakes — treating automation/controls hiring as something to handle after the equipment arrives.

Build the operations and maintenance crew to hit full production, not just open the doors

A facility that opens with a skeleton crew and hires up afterward loses months of ramp time it didn’t need to lose. Building the maintenance and operations team ahead of startup — not reactively after — is what actually gets a new plant to full production on schedule.

The bottom line

If you have a facility under construction and no team yet, the hiring conversation needs to start now, not when the general contractor finishes. Tell us about your project — or see how we approach greenfield staffing on our Plant Startup & Greenfield Recruiting page.
